Pull it out of the fridge, give a stir, and see if it needs some love. Let it sit on counter, feed it flour and water, then when bubbly make something or stick it back in fridge. I never discard - I always use.
Working method

King Arthur Flour starter. 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup water plus a smidge more is how I feed it. It's kept in the fridge so I don't have to deal with it every day.
